Gold coloured with a speckled back and head. While breeding the ♂ has a black face, the neck and belly are white edged. The ♀has less black, sometimes only on the belly and without the clear white edge.
Outside breeding season, both sexes are same with a light marked belly and less distinct colouring. A striking white underwing visible in flight.

Prefers heath with low vegetation, and only flies when disturbed. Solitary in summer, it seeks company with other plovers in winter.

Partly migratory wintering in central and south Europe, breeding in the same area as well as northern Europe.

LA:
≈ The PLUVIALIS SQUATAROLA (Grey plover) has the same shape and markings but a more silver black coloured back. 
≈ The CHARADRIUS MORINELLUS (Dotterel) in winter has a more defined eyebrow and in summer less bright colours with an orange belly.
