Rust red belly and tail. The ♂ has a grey back and head with a white edge along the top side of its black face, throat is black. The ♀ is grey-brown with a white rump and the red on tail and belly is less bright. When alarmed it wags its tail and its legs shiver. Prefers mature forest and parks with large trees. ⇔ l. 13-15 cm LA: ≈ The PHOENICURUS OCHRUROS (Black redstart) has a red tail only. ≈ The ERITHACUS RUBECULA (Robin) has also a red chin and cheeks. ≈ Subspecies PHOENICURUS PHOENICURUS SAMAMISICUS can be found in East Europe and Asia and is little smaller with white wing markings.
