Dark little bird with rust red wagging tail. The ♂ is black grey with a dark grey crown and black throat, on its wings and belly there are some white feathers, in winter it is lighter in colour. The ♀ is more brown-grey. Prefers to nest in rock cavities but old brick walls will do as well. Recently seen more often in suburban areas. Catches insects in flight and searches between rocks for little insects. Very territorial with loud singing on a high lookout point. ⇔ l. 13-15 cm The CUCULUS CANORUS (Cuckoo) often chooses this nest for its eggs. Partly a migratory bird breeding in central Europe and wintering in southern Europe and North Africa. LA: ≈ The PHOENICURUS PHOENICURUS (Redstart) has a red breast and the ♂ a whitish crown.
