White marked dark brown sturdy bird. Brown crown and wings, white under tail and tail end, a sturdy beak. The beak differs according to subspecies, the western variety has a thicker beak than the eastern variety. Found mostly at higher altitudes and in the north. Likes to eat beechnuts, acorns and hazelnuts that they hold in their claws to crack with their beaks. They make winter stashes. ⇔ l. 32-36 cm This is not a migratory bird but when food is scarce they move west and south.
