Grouse is blue-black with white stripes and a red eyebrow. Distinctively shaped dark tail and white rump feathers. The ♀ is brown marked, on the belly more greyish and the tail has an indentation visible in flight. The wing under surface is white with a grey rear edge. The ♂ court in groups with their tails up showing the white under feathers. The ♀ watch and select the best cock bird. ⇔ l. ♀ 42 cm, ♂ 61 cm syn. TETRAO TETRIX Rare due to the reduction of its habitat; forest edges next to moor and grass patches. LA: ≈ The TETRAO UROGALLUS (Capercaillie) is larger with a long wide completely black tail. ≈ The ♀ black grouse is difficult to separate from other pheasant-like ♀, such as the PHASIANUS COLCHICUS (Pheasant), but it has a forked tail.
