Large grey bird with long wings, the neck and head are black with a large white marking on the back and red eyes as well as a red crown. The long pointed beak is yellowish and the legs are black. The wings are very long, they look like a tail when walking around, the tail is short, however. They fly with stretched necks in a horizontal line or wide V shape and live in flocks. ⇔ l. 110-120 cm syn. Eurasian crane Every summer they moult but once every 3 years the moulting is total, preventing the bird from flying for a month. A migratory bird, breeding in North Europe and Asia, wintering in southern Europe and Africa. LA: ≈ The ARDEA CINEREA (Grey heron) is smaller and flies with the neck in (not stretched).
