Grey-brown or black with a round head and large eyes. White belly and a white wing marking. While breeding the ♂ is black instead of grey-brown, and the white on forehead, belly and wing is very pronounced. Outside breeding season, the genders are difficult to separate. Wags its tail often like a wagtail, rarely sings. Catches insects on the wing and on the ground. ⇔ l. 12-14 cm Migratory birds wintering in Africa and breeding in Europe. LA: ≈ The FICEDULA ALBICOLLIS has an unbroken white collar while breeding and is located further towards south-east Europe and in Asia. See photo LA.
