Grey-brown back and white belly, a collar of dark brown and white band. The black head stripe that is separated with the ♂ just over the beak. The beak is yellow-orange with a black tip and it has orange legs and a white band over the wings, which is visible in flight. 

Prefers sandy and rocky beaches in both fresh and brackish water. They are very active walking around looking for prey. In summer in pairs and in winter in groups.
