Lumpish bird with blue-grey back, long black eye stripe, light throat and breast becoming more orange to the rear with a short tail. ♂ has dark orange flanks. Sturdy legs with a strong rear toe. Thanks to the strong rear toe it can walk upwards and downwards on the tree looking for bugs. It also eats seeds and even makes a stash for winter though they mostly have forgotten it when needed. They mostly use woodpecker nests which they partly seal off to stop predators entering. ⇔ l. 14-15 cm syn. Wood nuthatch LA: ≈ It is similar to the OENANTHE OENANTHE (Wheatear) male in summer but the wheatear is more likely seen on the ground.
