Yellow-green bird with black markings, a forked tail and black wings with a broad yellow band. The ♂ has more clear colours with a black cap, forehead and chin. The belly of the ♀ is whitish with black markings, and young are browner. Prefers pine and deciduous woodland to feed on the seeds of fir, alder and birch. ⇔ l. 11-13 cm syn. SPINUS SPINUS A resident bird and in winter it can be seen in gardens. LA: ≈ Very similar to the CARDUELIS CHLORIS (Greenfinch) but has more yellow on its head. ≈ The SERINUS SERINUS (Serene) is darker coloured.
