A large bird of prey with dark back and head and white eyebrow. A finely striped pattern on its breast, belly and wing under surface. A long square tail. Colour varies from grey-brown to red-brown. ♀ is much larger than ♂. 

Young initially have cross striped markings on the belly and are more red-brown on their backs.

⇔ l. 49-66 cm

LA:
≈ ♂ easy to confuse with the ACCIPITER NISUS (Sparrowhawk) which is smaller. 
≈ Looks like a BUTEO BUTEO (Buzzard) but has a longer tail and shorter wider wings.
