Penguin with black breast band and belly pattern, white eyebrow and flanks. ♂ larger than the ♀. Feet are stained for the young and become completely black when 10 years of age. 

Penguin cannot fly but are great swimmers, their wings are developed to fins, the legs with webbed feet are at the rear. The legs make them stand upright or move on the belly but in the water, they act as a rudder. 

♂ returns to the same nest each year and then waits. When returning the ♀ recognizes him by his call.

This species is named after Ferdinand Magellaan.
