Gold yellow band on its black wings, red face with white edge and black cap. The body is pinkish brown marked, the belly is lighter than back, black tail with white under surface. Both genders are similar, but many colour variations exist. Young are born with the yellow wing band but are grey at first otherwise. The Latin name originates from the food it prefers, thistles (Latin: carduus). In winter it can be seen in gardens. ⇔ l. 11-12 cm
