Small dragonfly with striking broad brown wing bands on all 4 wings, black legs and a brown chest. ♂ has a bright red and broad abdomen and rose-red Pterostigmas (wing spots). ♀ has a yellow-coloured abdomen and white Pterostigmas. Young ♂ are similar to ♀. Slow kites and active late in the spring. ⇔ l. 28-35 mm LA: ≈ The other SYMPETRUM (Darters) miss the brown wing spots. ≈ The BRACHYTHEMIS LEUCOSTICTA (Banded groundling) also has the wing bands, but only occurs in southern Europe and has a grey-brown to black abdomen.
