Green lizard, ♂ has small black and yellow markings, yellow belly. In mating season the blue throat becomes more intense up to the cheeks. ♀is more variable in colour, often light green on the belly as well, but can be brown striped back with a grey-blue throat, paler than the ♂. Young are brown and striped. Likes to sunbathe, once warmed up very agile. Mostly on the surface, when alerted it flees into its burrow or a tree. Eats both insects and fruit. ⇔ l. 20-40 cm, including the tail. Lives in the south of Europe, there is a western variety LACERTA BILINEATA (Western green lizard), which is smaller, today regarded as separate species. See photo LA. Geographically divided between east/west Italy.
