Round brown lumpish body with a pointed brown nose, completely covered with needles. The needles can be several colours. Face, legs and belly are hairy and when threatened it curls like a ball for protection, all hairy parts are inside. Active at night and sleeps in a nest of leaves during the daytime, hibernates over winter. ⇔ hbl. 20-30 cm, sh. 12-22 cm, tl. 2-4 cm, spines: 15-25 mm long, 1-2 mm thick. LA: ≈ In eastern Europe, we find the ERINACEUS ROUMANICUS (Eastern Hedgehog) which has a light chest and is somewhat smaller. See photo LA.
