Forewing dark brown with a white line pattern, hindwing orange-red with bluish spots. Red marked legs and a red band across its head. Only active at night, mostly after midnight. It rests during the day with closed forewings. When threatened it spreads its wings and excretes a smelly substance in defence. Caterpillar is black brown with light grey spots, long hairs on the back and small bumps on the side. Young caterpillars are lighter in colour. ⇔ wsp. 45-65 mm
