Dark ear tufts and collar, slender white neck, dark brown feathers. During courting an orange-brown to black collar is erected. In winter more greyish and no collar. The young have white black striped heads. They are often taken under the wings of the adult, even when diving. The grebe dives and swims long distances below the surface. Nests are made on or close to the water. ⇔ l. 46-51 cm
