A grey bird with striking red beak and eye mask. The back has dark wavy lines, the belly side is light grey with a pinkish chest and red belly. The tail is dark brown. Sexes are equal. Lives in groups along lakes and marshes. ⇔ l. 9-13 cm Originally from Africa, in Europe, there are feral cage birds that live here in small colonies. syn. Common waxbill
