Small grey bird with a white throat and chest and red eyes. ♂ has a pitch-black head, grey back and white throat and belly, black tail with white edges. ♀ has a grey head and brown back, the chest and belly are pale brown, the throat is white. Both sexes have red eyes with a red eye ring and red legs. The pointed beak is brown with a black tip. Melodic singer from a vantage point or in flight. Often seen in orchards or wild gardens. ⇔ l. 13-14 cm LA: ≈ The SYLVIA ATRICAPILLA (Blackcap), which is often even smaller, is completely grey with a black cap. The black comes up to the black eye, not below it. ≈ The PARIDAE (Tits) with a black head all have a black marking below the beak.
