Brown head, white chest and throat, the remainder is dark grey to black, short tail. The young are grey with a white throat and breast. The northern subspecies has a rust brown breast marking between the white and black. Always near fast flowing water, mostly in mountainous areas where a pair has a territory of 1 to 2 km. The feathers are water repellant. ⇔ l. 17-18 cm This is the national bird of Norway.
