Red-brown butterfly with a serrated rear edge. The front wing is grey-brown with a striking yellow-orange marking and 3 light cross lines. The central one has a double line and there are 2 small eye-spots as well. When resting the wings are flat and have a curved tip. The light-green caterpillar is long with a dark and yellow line on its sides. It can be found in willows and poplars. ⇔ wsp. 40-45 mm It often winters as a butterfly in barns and basements. syn. The Herald
