A small skimmer with a short body. The top of the breast will show a black triangle, and the side is yellow with a black band containing three yellow markings. The legs are black as is the side of the rear end. The ♂ become almost entirely black except for the breast, the ♀ has a yellow rear top. It is often seen near pools. ⇔ l. 29-34 mm syn. Black meadowhawk LA: ≈ ♀ of the SYMPETRUM VULGATUM (Vagrant Darter) is longer and with less black.
