A colourful horse-fly with marked brown wings, a black-yellow rear and the eyes are bright green with purple-black dots. The antennae are well visible. Although the markings are similar, the ♂ has its eyes on each other while ♀ has some space between the eyes. The ♀ feeds on the blood of bovines, horses and humans, needed to make eggs. The ♂ feeds on nectar. ⇔ l. 6-11 mm
