Very large wasp with bright yellow antennae and legs. On its heads large yellow markings, the black eyes next to them. The orange-black rear has a sort of tail, the long ovipositor (to lay eggs) of the ♀ starts below that. The front body is black, the rear of the ♂ is more red, the ♀ more yellow. The yellow-brown wings are folded back when resting. ⇔ l. 35-40 mm syn. Banded Horntail, Greater Horntail The ovipositor is often confused with a sting.
