Brown snake with a checkered pattern, a small pointy snout and round pupils. The colour is variable from yellow-brown to green-grey, and the back markings can be vague. The belly is very variable being white, yellow, pink or red checkered or unclear lines or completely black. This water snake feeds on fish and amphibian and stays beneath the surface for extended periods. It also ambushes prey by waiting for passing prey. ⇔ l. 100-130 cm Can be found in South East Europe. LA: ≈ The NATRIX MAURA (Viperine water snake) has a less pointy head and clearer markings. ≈ The NATRIX NATRIX (Grass snake) has the nose and eyes more at the side of the head and not pointed upwards. ≈ The ZAMENIS LONGISSIMUS (Aesculapian snake) is without keeled scales.
