Slim black fly with sturdy long wings. The short half round antennae on its head with a long sucking snout pointing down. The legs are hairy, and specifically, the ♀ has brush-like thighs. Larvae live below the surface and feed on insects. Being an adult, they feed on both nectar and other insects. ⇔ l. 10-12 mm In summertime sometimes seen in large swarms. LA: ≈ The EMPIS TESSELLATA is bigger with brown-yellowish wings.
