Small yellowish tortoise with a spherical shield. The colour and pattern of the shield are variable with the yellow sometimes more green or orange-brown. At the front edge and at the legs the shield is a little curved upwards. The rear two segments form a straight line just above the tail. The tail has a small horn-like extrusion and is much longer for the male. Often seen on dry open fields with bushes. It will take a bath now and then. ⇔ l. 20-30 cm It prefers warm summers in southern Europe. LA: ≈ The TESTUDO GRAECA (Spur-thighed tortoise) is not as spherical with less bright colours and one shield segment above the tail instead of two.
