Large snail, the shell has 4 to 5 whorls. The shell is yellow with darker lined markings variable in number and thickness or even missing. The edge of the shell is often dark coloured and the snail is dark grey. The top set of antennae contains the eyes and the lower ones are used to smell. Can be found in woods and forests on lime-rich soils that they need to maintain the shell. While hibernating the shell is sealed, they can be inactive for years inside the shell. Like most snails, they are hermaphrodite meaning they can fertilise each other. ⇔ l. 40-50 mm syn. Brown-lipped snail
