Black beetle with a shiny even red shield, sometimes more brown or yellowish. The shield is a little oval shaped and at the back a distinctive dark marking. Eats a lot of poplar leaves as do the larvae. When disturbed they excrete a smelly substance. ⇔ l. 11-13 mm syn. MELASOMA POPULI LA: Resembles the family of COCCINELLIDAE (Ladybugs) but is larger, oval-shaped and without the dots.
