Top surface brown-black with large and small white marks like a checkerboard. The underside is much paler, greyer with eyespots and stripes. Prefers grassy sandy areas. ⇔ wsp. 40-50 mm ♂ is actively seeking ♀, in contrast to most butterflies just waiting for a mate to fly by.
