Large marked beetle, the shield is brown-black with yellow-white marble like markings. The body is hairy and lighter coloured. The legs and antennae are black and the ♂ has large fan-shaped antennae. The ♀ has smaller antennae but the body is larger. Active in twilight and at night, it prefers sandy areas with pine like dunes. Larvae develop in 3-4 years feeding on grass roots and can become 40 mm. Once grown, they live for about a month, mostly in July. ⇔ l. 24-40 mm
